TikTok For You Page Showing the Wrong Videos? Reset It, Manage Topics and Filter Keywords

TikTok gives you four official ways to change what shows up on your For You page: refresh it completely, adjust topics with sliders, filter keywords and hashtags (up to 100), and tap Not interested on posts you don’t want. TikTok says a refresh and topic settings only change your For You feed; keyword filters can cover supported feeds such as For You and Following, depending on where you signed up. Topic changes can take some time to personalize.

Quick answer

Start over: Profile > Menu ☰ > Settings and privacy > Content preferences > Refresh your For You feed (TikTok says this can’t be undone). Fine-tune instead: Content preferences > Manage topics to move topic sliders, or Filter keywords to block words and hashtags. On a post you don’t like, press and hold > Not interested.

Does this match what you see?

  • Your For You page keeps showing the same kind of videos.
  • You see topics or hashtags you don’t want.
  • Refreshing your For You feed didn’t seem to change anything.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Refresh (reset) your For You feed

Read first: can remove data2 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

TikTok says refreshing shows you some popular content, and your likes and comments on it reshape your recommendations.

  1. From settings: Profile > Menu ☰ > Settings and privacy > Content preferences > Refresh your For You feed, then follow the steps.
  2. From the feed (select regions): press and hold a post (or tap Share) > Why this video > Adjust your For You > Refresh your For You feed.

TikTok says a refresh can’t be undone, and only your For You feed changes: your Following feed, profile, inbox and ads aren’t affected.

Did it work? You see popular content to start; like and comment on what you enjoy to shape the new feed.

Manage topics: see more or less of something

TikTok groups content into topics (sports, food & drinks, lifestyle and so on), and you can set how much of each you see from creators you don’t follow.

  • From settings: Settings and privacy > Content preferences > Manage topics, move the sliders and tap Save.
  • From a post: Share > Why this video > Adjust your For You > Manage topics > adjust > Save.

TikTok says this only affects your For You feed, and it may take some time to personalize. Meanwhile, use Not interested.

Filter keywords and hashtags

Add a filter: Settings and privacy > Content preferences > Filter keywords > Add keyword, enter a word or hashtag, pick which feeds to filter (such as For You and Following), then Save. TikTok says you can add up to 100 keywords.

  • Smart filter: after adding a keyword, turn on Smart filter to also catch similar words and variations. TikTok says not all variations are listed, and some keywords can’t be filtered.
  • Edit or delete: in Filter keywords, tap a keyword to edit it and Save, or tap Delete next to it (or Delete keyword) and confirm.
  • Option missing? TikTok says that depending on where you signed up, you may not be able to filter keywords in some feeds.
  • Parents: you can manage your teen’s keyword filters through Family Pairing.

Not interested: filter a post’s hashtags

Press and hold a post (or tap Share) > Not interested. To also filter its hashtags:

  • Tap Details at the bottom and choose an option under Not interested.
  • Tap Details again to see the post’s hashtags, select the ones to filter, then tap Submit.

TikTok describes this hashtag filter for posts and ads in the For You feed.

Stop seeing one creator (mute their posts)

  • A friend: on their profile, tap Share > Mute their posts.
  • Anyone else: press and hold their post (or Share) > Not interested > Creator > Submit.
  • After reporting a post, turn on Mute content from … to mute that person.

TikTok says muted accounts’ posts won’t appear in your feeds unless you visit their profile, and they aren’t notified. To undo: Settings and privacy > Content preferences > Muted accounts > Undo.

Following feed missing, or content seems limited?

Restricted Mode limits mature content and turns off the Following feed, going LIVE and LIVE gifting. See Restricted Mode to check or turn it off.

How to know it worked

  • Your For You page shows more of what you want and less of what you filtered.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Refresh not working? Send TikTok feedback saying whether it’s the For You or Following feed and whether you see the same or different posts after refreshing (how).
