How to Turn Off or Limit Meta AI on Facebook and Messenger

Meta AI now appears across Facebook and Messenger. The Meta help pages we used don’t describe a single switch that removes it everywhere, but they do give you real controls: you can stop Meta AI features that share a Messenger chat’s messages (such as summaries), turn off Meta AI comment summaries on your Page, and object to Meta using your information to improve its AI. Here’s each one, with Meta’s own steps, and what Meta says Meta AI can see.

Quick answer

Messenger chat: open the chat > Information > Message permissions and turn off Allow message sharing. Meta says no one in the chat can then use Meta AI features that share messages with it. Your Page: Settings & privacy > Settings > Posts and turn off Allow comment summaries on your posts. Your data: Meta has a form to object to your information being used for its generative AI.

Does this match what you see?

  • You don’t want people using Meta AI to summarize or edit things in your chat.
  • Meta AI summaries appear under your Page’s posts.
  • You don’t want your information used to improve Meta’s AI.
  • You’re not sure what Meta AI can read in your chats.

Based on Messenger Help “How to manage message sharing permissions”, “Ask Meta AI on Messenger” and Facebook Help “Turn Meta AI comment summaries on or off for posts on your Facebook Page” (supplied by the site owner). Message permission steps are the same on iPhone, iPad, Android and computer.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Stop Meta AI features in a Messenger chat

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says when message sharing permissions are off, no one in the chat can use AI features that involve sharing messages with Meta AI, such as summarizing the chat or asking Meta AI to edit someone else’s photo.

  1. Open the chat in Messenger.
  2. Tap or click Information.
  3. Below Privacy & support, tap or click Message permissions. If you don’t see it, Meta says the feature may not be available to you yet, or the chat may be a type that doesn’t support it, such as a Marketplace chat.
  4. Turn off Allow message sharing.

Meta says in a one-to-one chat either person can change this; in a group chat only group admins can. If you can’t flip the switch in a group, ask an admin. Turning it off also turns off auto-save photos for that chat.

Did it work? Our check: Message permissions shows Allow message sharing as off.

Fix 2: Turn off Meta AI comment summaries on your Page

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says comment summaries are on by default, and a Page owner or admin can turn them off for all posts on the Page at any time.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Tap Menu (top left) or your profile picture, then Options, and select your Page.
  2. Tap Menu again, then Settings & privacy > Settings.
  3. Swipe down to Posts and turn off Allow comment summaries on your posts.

Android

  1. Tap Menu (top left), then Options, and select your Page.
  2. Tap Menu again, then Settings & privacy > Settings.
  3. Swipe down to Posts and turn off Allow comment summaries on your posts.

Computer (browser)

  1. Click your profile photo (top right) > See all profiles, and select your Page.
  2. Click your Page’s profile photo (top right) > Settings & privacy > Settings.
  3. Under Audience and visibility, click Posts and turn off Allow comment summaries on your posts.

Meta says your choice saves automatically. The setting covers all your Page posts, but not posts you make in Facebook groups, where summaries may still appear. Meta also says summaries are only available for some Page posts with a large number of comments, and aren’t available to everyone yet, but you can still turn them off.

Did it work? Our check: the setting shows as off under Posts.

Object to Meta using your information for its AI

Meta says that if you don’t want your information used to develop and improve Meta’s generative AI models, you can submit an objection to Meta (external site, opens in a new tab).

Our note: this is a request to Meta. It doesn’t remove Meta AI from your apps.

What Meta AI can see in your chats

  • Messages shared with it: Meta says Meta AI reads and replies to content shared with it, including messages that mention @Meta AI, AI image prompts and messages you ask it to summarize.
  • Group chats: Meta says that when anyone mentions @Meta AI, messages from the past 30 days are shared with Meta AI. Meta says this isn’t available in all countries; where it isn’t, only the message that mentions Meta AI is shared.
  • Everyone sees it: Meta says others in the chat can see your message to Meta AI and its reply. Meta advises being careful with personal information such as your address or phone number.
  • Direct chats with Meta AI: Meta says it can remember details you choose to share and use them in later replies.
  • How Meta uses it: Meta says it uses your interactions with AIs to improve AI at Meta, and that if the AI can’t answer, it shares your messages to the AI and general information like your region with select partners.
  • Turning off message sharing doesn’t stop everything: Meta says people can still forward messages, report them to Meta, or forward them to Meta AI.

Meta also says Meta AI’s answers may be inaccurate or inappropriate and shouldn’t be used for important decisions. Encrypted chats: see how Messenger encryption works.

Keep summaries on, but remove one

Meta says that if comment summaries are on, you can remove the summary from a specific post on your Page. It also says that if you hide or delete a comment used in a summary, Meta AI may generate a new summary without it. Ads, including boosted posts, don’t get summaries.

How to know it worked

  • Our check: the chat or Page setting you changed shows as off.
