How to Boost a Facebook Post or Marketplace Listing (and Fix It If You Can’t)

Boosting turns a Marketplace listing or Page post into a paid Facebook ad so more people see it. Meta says a boosted listing may help you sell faster, but this feature may not be available to you yet. Below are Meta’s own steps for both, how budgets and audiences work, how to edit or stop a boost, how to read the results, and what to do when Boost won’t work.

Quick answer

Marketplace listing: go to Marketplace > Your account, find the listing under Your listings, click Boost listing, choose a budget and duration, check your payment method and click Promote now. Page post: click Boost post on the post, choose an audience, Total budget and duration, pick a payment method and click Boost. Meta says ads run once they’re reviewed and approved.

Does this match what you see?

  • You want more people to see a Marketplace item.
  • You want to promote a post from your Facebook Page.
  • You’re not sure whether to boost or create a full ad.
  • You want to change the budget or end a boost early.

Based on Meta Business Help “Boost Marketplace listings”, “About Marketplace boosted listings”, “See insights for boosted listings”, “Troubleshoot posts that can’t be boosted” and Meta’s lesson “How to create compelling Facebook and Instagram ads” (supplied by the site owner). Meta says boosting may not be available to everyone yet.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Boost a Marketplace listing

Changes billing5 minComputer (browser)

Meta’s steps from its “Boost Marketplace listings” page.

  1. Go to Marketplace and click Your account.
  2. Under Your listings, find the listing and click Boost listing.
  3. Pick the total budget with the recommended duration, or click Select custom budget & duration: use + or - (or the End date box) to set how many days it runs, then the Total budget slider or Edit to enter an amount. Meta says there’s a minimum budget per day.
  4. Items with delivery: choose your audience. You can Edit one, or Create new, name it and save it to reuse. In Locations, add countries, regions, cities, addresses or postal codes (Meta says location targeting isn’t available in all countries), adjust the radius on the map, and click Save audience.
  5. Local items (no delivery): skip the audience step. Meta says the audience is fixed to adults (18+) within 40 miles of the listing’s location.
  6. Check your Payment method, look at the Ad preview and review the Payment summary.
  7. Click Promote now.

Meta says you can also boost straight after publishing: click Publish, then Boost listing, and follow the same budget, audience and payment steps.

Did it work? Our check: under Your listings, the listing now has an Edit boost option.

Fix 2: Boost a post on your Facebook Page

Changes billing5 minComputer (browser)

Meta’s boost steps from its “Troubleshoot posts that can’t be boosted” page, with audience options from “About creating ads from your Facebook Page”.

  1. Go to your Facebook Page and find the post. Click Boost post.
  2. Optional: add a post button to drive people to take an action.
  3. Select the audience you want to reach. Meta’s options include people who like your Page, people who like your Page and their friends, or people you choose through targeting (click Create new audience to build one by location, interests, age, gender and more). If you build your own audience, Meta says location is the only required targeting option; with the two Page-likes options, you can also set a location.
  4. Under Total budget, pick a pre-filled budget or click Choose your own. Set a duration or an end date next to Run this ad until.
  5. Select a payment method. Meta says if you don’t have one, you’ll be asked to add one after clicking Boost.
  6. Check the rest of the fields and click Boost. Meta says the ad starts running once it’s reviewed and approved.

Did it work? Our check: the post shows as boosted on your Page.

Edit, extend or delete a Marketplace boost

  1. Go to Marketplace > Your account, find the boosted listing under Your listings and click Edit boost.
  2. Click Edit ad in the top right.
  3. To change the length, use the End date box (Meta says there’s a minimum daily budget). To change the total, click Edit under Total budget.
  4. To stop it, click Options > Delete ad > Confirm.
  5. Click Save changes.

Where a boosted listing appears and who sees it

  • Placements: Meta lists Facebook Feed, Facebook Search, Marketplace Search and Marketplace product detail pages. It says that from March 2026 the Feed placement includes the Facebook Friends tab.
  • Audience: local listings reach people nearby (Meta says within 40 miles); for delivered items, you choose the audience.
  • Messages and sales: Meta says buyers can message you through Messenger, and boosts for delivered items can be optimized further for sales.
  • No extra design work: Meta says the boost uses your listing’s photos, title, price and description.

Rules your boosted listing must follow

Meta says boosted listings must follow its Advertising Standards. It also says rules for ads about politics or issues of importance vary by country, and where your country has an enforcement process for those ads, boosted listings aren’t eligible to run.

See how your boosted listing performed

Meta says this feature may not be available to you yet. To view it:

  1. Go to Marketplace > Your account.
  2. Under Your listings, click Options next to the boosted listing, then View insights.
  3. In Performance, see the key results: checkouts started for items with delivery, or messaging conversations started for local items. In Audience, use the People, Placements and Locations tabs to see who saw it.

Meta defines the key metrics as:

  • Reach: the number of people who saw your ad at least once, which Meta says may include multiple views by the same people.
  • Messaging conversations started: first-time messages from buyers about your listing, and the cost per conversation.
  • Initiate checkout: checkouts started on Facebook and attributed to your ad, and the cost per checkout (items with delivery only).

Meta says you also see the total spent and how long the boost lasted, and that Meta Ads Manager or Meta Ads Reporting shows more, such as frequency, link clicks and impressions.

Boost a post or create a full ad?

Meta’s lesson on advertising from your Page describes two other options besides boosting:

  • Automated Ads: you answer a few questions about your goals and get a personalized ad plan. Meta says you can’t set an end date, but you can pause or delete them at any time.
  • Create new ad: more control over how the ad is made, how long it runs and where it appears.

Create a new ad from your Page

  1. On your Page, select Promote, then choose an ad type (such as Create new ad) and a goal (such as Get more website visitors).
  2. Add photos or video, text, and an action button.
  3. Define your audience (for example by location and age).
  4. Set a daily budget and how many days it runs. Meta’s example: USD 5 a day for 5 days means you’re charged up to USD 25 in total.
  5. Publish it. Meta says ads are reviewed against its Advertising Standards, which can take up to 24 hours.

Ad not running or not reaching anyone?

Meta’s checks for ads created from your Page:

  • Not running: make sure it hasn’t been paused or stopped, including by another admin or advertiser on the Page, and that it was approved. If you were notified it wasn’t approved, make the necessary changes or create a new ad.
  • Budget used up: you may be able to increase it; if not, create a new ad.
  • Running too long: Meta says ads that run longer than about a week tend to decline in performance, and recommends a new ad with a new image or text about once a week.
  • Edited too often: Meta says its delivery system takes 24 hours to adjust after an edit, longer with frequent edits, so let it run at least 24 hours before editing again.
  • Audience too broad for the budget: Meta suggests creating a new ad with a more tightly focused audience.

To check results for a boosted post, Meta says find it on your Page: you’ll see how many people it reached, and you can hover over the bar to compare organic and paid reach.
