Embedded YouTube Video Not Playing? “Watch on YouTube”, Error 153 and Embedding Disabled

An embedded YouTube video can refuse to play for reasons the website can’t always fix. YouTube says the usual ones are: the creator turned embedding off, the video is age-restricted (it sends viewers to YouTube), or the page didn’t send an HTTP Referer, which shows error 153. Viewers can still click Watch on YouTube. If you run the site, the fixes are below.

Quick answer

Viewer: click Watch on YouTube. Site owner: embed using Share > Embed, don’t open the embed link directly (that causes error 153), make sure your site sends an HTTP Referer, and allowlist youtube.com (and youtube-nocookie.com) on your firewall. Creator: turn embedding on in YouTube Studio > Content > Details > Show more > Allow embedding.

Does this match what you see?

  • The embedded video shows “Video unavailable” or “Watch on YouTube”.
  • You see error 153 in the player.
  • An embedded playlist skips some videos.
  • The video plays on youtube.com but not on another site.

  • Try the video on youtube.com: if it plays there, the problem is the embed.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Viewers: watch it on YouTube

Safe & reversible1 minComputer (browser)

YouTube says you can still select “Watch on YouTube” when an embed is blocked.

Computer (browser)

  1. Click Watch on YouTube in the player, or open the video on youtube.com.
  2. Age-restricted? Sign in to YouTube to watch it there. See age-restricted videos.

Did it work? The video plays on YouTube.

Fix 2: Site owners: embed it the way YouTube expects

Safe & reversible5 minComputer (browser)

YouTube’s embed steps, and the network requirement.

Computer (browser)

  1. On a computer, open the video or playlist, click Share > Embed, and copy the HTML code into your page.
  2. Network administrators must allowlist youtube.com (and youtube-nocookie.com if you use privacy-enhanced mode).
  3. Is your site or app aimed at children? YouTube says you must self-designate it, which turns off personalized ads and some player features.

Did it work? The embedded video plays on your page.

Fix 3: Creators: turn embedding on (or off)

Safe & reversible2 minComputer (browser)

YouTube says creators control whether a video can be embedded.

Computer (browser)

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Content.
  2. Next to the video, select Details > Show more.
  3. Check (or uncheck) Allow embedding, then save.

Did it work? The video plays when embedded.

Error 153

YouTube says error 153 appears when a request has no HTTP Referer, so playback is blocked. Viewers can still click Watch on YouTube. It typically happens when someone opens the embed link directly (for example, in the address bar) instead of on a web page. Site owners fix it by sending an HTTP Referer with their requests; YouTube points to its developer documentation for details.

Privacy-enhanced mode and embed options

  • Privacy-enhanced mode: change the embed domain from youtube.com to youtube-nocookie.com. YouTube says views then don’t affect the viewer’s YouTube recommendations, and ads are non-personalized. Websites only.
  • Start time: add ?start= and the time in seconds.
  • Autoplay: add &autoplay=1 after the video ID. YouTube says autoplayed embeds don’t count as views.
  • Captions on by default: add &cc_load_policy=1 (and &cc_lang_pref= with a two-letter language code).

Videos missing from an embedded playlist

YouTube says videos may not appear if the uploader turned off embedding, they’re age-restricted, or they’re private (unless shared with you). For best results, include only public videos that allow embedding.

How to know it worked

  • The video plays on the website, or you know why it can’t.
