WhatsApp Username Not Working? “Not Available”, “Taken” and Other Fixes

WhatsApp usernames (like @Name123) let people contact you without seeing your phone number. WhatsApp says they’re rolling out gradually over the next few months: where they’re not live yet, you can reserve one. If you can’t create the username you want, the message you see usually explains why.

Quick answer

No username option? WhatsApp says update WhatsApp, restart it, and check usernames are available in your region (you can’t reserve on WhatsApp Web or Desktop: use your phone). “Not available” usually means the name is held for its Instagram or Facebook owner, or your attempt was interrupted. “Taken” means someone claimed it first. Usernames must be 3–35 characters, using only lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods, and can’t be only numbers.

Does this match what you see?

  • You can’t find Create username or Reserve username.
  • WhatsApp says “This username is not available” or “Username is taken.”
  • WhatsApp says “Try again later.”
  • You can’t claim the same username you use on Instagram or Facebook.

Based on WhatsApp Help Center “About usernames” (web, iPhone, Android), “How to create and manage your username” (web, Android, iPhone) and “Troubleshoot username issues” (web, Android, iPhone), supplied by the site owner, 2026-10-30. WhatsApp says usernames are rolling out gradually.

Why this happens: the possible causes

What each username message means, from WhatsApp’s pages.

WhatsApp username problems
MessageUsual reason
No username optionOld app or not in your region yet
“Not available”Held for its Instagram/Facebook owner, or interrupted
“Username is taken”Someone claimed it first
“Try again later”Too many attempts
  • Still rolling outCheck this first

WhatsApp says usernames are rolling out gradually and may not be available where you are yet.

  • Name already held or claimedCheck this first

WhatsApp says names in use on Instagram or Facebook are held for their owner, and usernames are first come, first served.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Update WhatsApp, then restart it.
  • To reserve a username, use your main phone: WhatsApp says reserving isn’t available on WhatsApp Web or Desktop.
  • Check your username follows the format rules.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: You don’t see the option to create or reserve a username

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

WhatsApp says usernames are rolling out gradually and the option appears in your profile when it’s available.

  1. Update WhatsApp to the latest version, then restart it so the latest features load.
  2. Check usernames are available in your region. Where they’re still rolling out, WhatsApp says you may see Reserve username instead.
  3. Use your phone: WhatsApp says reserving a username isn’t available on WhatsApp Web or Desktop.

Did it work? Our check: Create username or Reserve username shows in your profile.

Fix 2: Create or reserve your username

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

WhatsApp’s steps for each phone:

iPhone & iPad

  1. Tap You, then tap your profile.
  2. Tap Create username (or Reserve username where usernames are still rolling out), then Create username.
  3. Enter the username you want. If it’s not available, WhatsApp can suggest alternatives.
  4. Tap Save > Done.

Android

  1. Tap More (three vertical dots) > Settings, then tap your profile.
  2. Tap Create username > Create username (or Reserve username > Create username where usernames are still rolling out).
  3. Enter the username you want. If it’s not available, WhatsApp can suggest alternatives.
  4. Tap Save > Done.

WhatsApp says a reserved username is held for you so no one else can claim it, and becomes active when the feature launches in your region; you’ll get a notification in WhatsApp when it’s ready. Until then, no one can see it or contact you by it. If you change or delete a reserved username, it may become available to others.

Did it work? Our check: your username shows under Username in your profile.

“This username is not available”

WhatsApp gives two main reasons:

  • It’s held for an Instagram or Facebook owner. If the name is already in use on Instagram or Facebook, WhatsApp holds it for the owner of that profile. If that’s you, you can claim it by adding WhatsApp to the same Meta Account.
  • Your attempt was interrupted, for example by a network problem. WhatsApp says the name may look unavailable for a while, and should become available after a few minutes or when you restart the app.

WhatsApp also says some usernames are held for businesses, governments or public figures and can’t be claimed by others. Our note: also check the format rules.

“Username is taken”

WhatsApp says usernames are first come, first served, so someone else has already claimed it and you’ll need a different one. Try a variation with numbers, underscores or other words (WhatsApp’s examples are @janedoe_london and @janedoe1), or tap Suggest a username.

“Try again later”

WhatsApp says if you’ve tried to create a username several times in a short time, you may be temporarily limited. Wait a few minutes, then try again.

Username format rules

WhatsApp says your username:

  • Must be 3 to 35 characters long.
  • Can only contain lowercase letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), underscores (_) and periods (.).
  • Can’t be only numbers, must be unique, and can’t contain restricted words or phrases.

Claim your Instagram or Facebook username

WhatsApp says if it isn’t already taken, you can claim the username you use on Facebook or Instagram (including Instagram professional accounts) by adding WhatsApp to the same Meta Account (you may still see it called Accounts Center).

  1. Android: More (three vertical dots) > Settings. iPhone: You.
  2. Tap the area around your profile photo, then Create username.
  3. Tap Use Instagram username or Use Facebook username, then follow the prompts to add your profiles to your Meta Account.
  • Can’t claim it? WhatsApp says if different people use the same username on Instagram and Facebook, it goes to whoever claims it first on WhatsApp.
  • WhatsApp says adding WhatsApp to your Meta Account is optional, and you can move it out at any time.
  • WhatsApp says if you claimed your username from Instagram or Facebook, download WhatsApp to keep it, or it may become available for others to claim.
  • If you later change your Instagram or Facebook username, WhatsApp says it won’t update automatically: change it on WhatsApp separately.

Change or delete your username

  • Change: tap the area around your profile photo (Android: More (three vertical dots) > Settings first; iPhone: You), then Username > Edit > Change username, enter a new one and tap Save > Continue (Android) or Save > Done (iPhone). WhatsApp says there’s a limit to how many times you can change it, and your old username may then be claimed by someone else.
  • Delete: go to the same place, then tap Username > Edit > Delete username > Delete. WhatsApp says you have 14 days to reclaim it before others can, and that people can see your phone number again once it’s deleted.
  • Changing phone number? WhatsApp says your username moves with you if you change your number on the same phone, but moving it to a different phone isn’t available yet. See change your number.

Can’t find or message someone by username

WhatsApp says you can message, call or save someone with their username, but you need their exact username, and their username key if they’ve set one.

  1. In Chats, tap the new chat icon, then the search bar (or search icon).
  2. Type the person’s full, exact username. WhatsApp says if it exists, you can start a chat.
  3. Tap their username. If they have a username key, enter it and tap Next.
  • No key? WhatsApp says you can’t reach them by username without it, and you need to get it from them. Once you’ve entered the correct key, you can message them directly from then on.
  • WhatsApp says you don’t need a key if you already have their number saved, you’ve chatted before, you’re in a group together, you scanned their QR code, or they messaged you first.
  • In the chat you’ll see their username and display name, but not their number unless you have it saved.
  • Call or add to a group: WhatsApp says to call, go to Calls, tap the new call icon, search the exact username and tap the voice or video icon next to their name (iPhone: tap their username first). To add someone to a group, open the group chat, tap the group name, tap the add icon > Add members, type their exact username, then tap their name (iPhone: then Add). The username key rule applies here too.

Share your own username

WhatsApp says your username creates a direct link, wa.me/YourUsername, you can share in person, on social media or on a business card, and your QR code now includes your username. See share your QR code.

Username key: control who can reach you

WhatsApp says a username key is an optional code. With it on, people who haven’t messaged you before need both your username and your key to contact you the first time. Share the key with your username when you want someone new to reach you.

  1. Go to your profile (Android: More (three vertical dots) > Settings; iPhone: You), then tap the area around your profile photo.
  2. Tap Username > Contact me by username, then select People who know my key.
  3. WhatsApp generates a key for you (tap Get a different key for another one). Tap Save key.
  • Forgot your key? WhatsApp says check it any time: Username > Contact me by username > Username key. It also shows under your username in your profile.
  • Change it: in Username key, tap Get a different key > Save key. WhatsApp says you’ll then need to share the new key with anyone who hasn’t contacted you yet; people you’ve already chatted with aren’t affected.
  • Who doesn’t need it: people who already have your number saved, people you’ve chatted with before, people in a group with you, people who scanned your QR code, and people you messaged first.
  • Can’t set one up on a computer? WhatsApp says creating a username key isn’t available on WhatsApp Web or Desktop: use your main phone.
  • WhatsApp generates the key for you; you can’t choose your own code, but you can tap Get a different key. You can add, change or remove it at any time.
  • It doesn’t affect existing chats: people you’ve already talked to can keep messaging you.
  • Someone can’t reach you? WhatsApp says you won’t be notified if someone can’t reach you by username because they don’t have your key. Our tip: if you’re expecting to hear from someone, send them your key with your username.
  • WhatsApp says if your WhatsApp is connected to another Meta account that says you’re under 18, your username key is on by default to help protect your privacy.

What a username shows, and who can see your number

  • WhatsApp says people who don’t have your number saved see your @username instead, in groups, chats and calls. People who already have your number keep seeing it and the name they saved.
  • Creating a username removes your number from existing chats with people who don’t have it saved; you can keep chatting as normal.
  • Your username is different from your display name, which doesn’t have to be unique. You still need a phone number for your account, and anyone who has your number can still contact you by it.
  • There’s no searchable directory: people need your exact username, or you can share a QR code or link.
  • When you message someone new who hasn’t saved you, WhatsApp says it might show the country your number is registered in, to help them stay safe.
  • Chatting with a business? WhatsApp says if you have a username the first time you chat with a business, it won’t see your number unless you share it, though your country is shared based on your number’s country code. A business that already has your number keeps seeing it. If a business asks for your contact (for an order or payment, for example), tap Send contact info and choose your number, your username or both.

How to know it worked

  • Our check: your @username shows in your profile, and people can start a chat with you by entering it.
