WhatsApp says you can also add an avatar as or alongside your profile picture (on Android, it says people see it when they swipe on your picture). You might also be able to generate an AI image; this is only available in limited countries and might not be available to you yet, even if others in your country have access.

Use your Facebook or Instagram photo
WhatsApp says if you add your profiles to the same Meta Account (you may still see it called Accounts Center), you can import or sync your profile picture. Adding WhatsApp to your Meta Account is optional.
- Import once: WhatsApp says on Android you can import only on your primary device. Go to your profile > Edit and tap Facebook or Instagram (iPhone: Import from Facebook or Import from Instagram), crop the photo, then tap Choose.
- Keep them in sync: go to Settings (iPhone: You > your profile) > Meta Account > Syncing profile pictures > Start a new sync, choose profiles and a picture, then Save. WhatsApp says changing the picture on one synced account updates the others.
- Stop syncing: Meta Account > Syncing profile pictures > Your synced profiles > Stop syncing profile pictures > Confirm.
Someone can’t see your new photo or About
- WhatsApp says your privacy settings decide who can see your profile photo and About; see WhatsApp privacy settings.
- WhatsApp says if you block someone, they won’t see any updates to your photo or About.
- If you can’t see someone else’s photo, see WhatsApp contacts not showing.
How to know it worked
- Our check: your profile shows the photo, name and About you chose.
Still not working? Your next steps
- Our note: your profile photo can also show in people’s notifications when you message them (if they have notifications on); to control that, see WhatsApp privacy settings.
