How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: You don’t see Meta AI
WhatsApp says Meta AI is rolling out by country and language.
- Don’t see Meta AI? WhatsApp says Meta AI and some features are only available in limited countries and may not be available to you yet, even if others in your country have it. In some markets it’s only available on devices set to certain languages.
- WhatsApp says it’s rolling out gradually and recommends keeping WhatsApp updated through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, and watching the WhatsApp blog and Help Center for when it reaches you.
- Where is it? WhatsApp says Meta AI may show as a multicolored ring (pink and purple, or blue and purple) on the Chats tab, and some people see different ways to open it while Meta tests options. You can also chat with it in group chats or forward messages to it.
Did it work? Our check: a Meta AI button or ring shows on your Chats tab.

Fix 2: Start a chat, forward a message or ask from search
WhatsApp’s steps for each device:
- Start: tap or click the Meta AI button on the Chats tab, accept the terms if asked, then pick a suggested prompt or type your own and send.
- Forward a message: on Android, tap and hold the message > Forward; on iPhone, tap and hold > Forward, then tap the forward icon; on WhatsApp Web, hover over it > open its menu > Forward; on Windows or Mac, right-click it > Forward, then Forward again. Then search Meta AI, tap Continue if asked, add your prompt and send.
- From the search bar (Android, iPhone and Mac): tap or click the search field at the top of Chats, pick a suggested prompt or type your own, then select Ask (or a recommendation under Ask Meta AI). WhatsApp says you only see the terms if you’ve never used Meta AI, then it opens a Meta AI chat. By default the suggested topics are generated automatically, not from your personal information.
- WhatsApp says Meta AI may use sources and links from the internet, which you can view and report, and you can send Meta feedback on its answers.
Did it work? Our check: a chat with Meta AI opens with its reply.
Did Fix 2 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 2. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
AI images won’t create, save or share
WhatsApp says you can create AI images with Meta AI, then modify them. Languages: WhatsApp says only English, Arabic, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai and Vietnamese are supported at this time. Our tip: if images won’t generate, try one of those languages.
Where to create one
- In the chat with Meta AI: describe the image and send it. WhatsApp says the image appears in the chat.
- In any one-to-one or group chat: tap attach (paperclip on Android, plus sign on iPhone; on Mac, click the attach button) > AI images. Then tap New image and describe it, tap Use photo to edit one of yours, or pick a suggested image. On phones you can also tap and hold the mic and describe it out loud.
- Edit one you already made: WhatsApp says in the chat with Meta AI, reply to the image (on a phone, swipe right on it; on a computer, open its menu > Reply), describe the changes and send; the updated image appears in the chat.
- Want it animated? WhatsApp says in the chat with Meta AI, after it creates the image, type Animate it and send. In other chats on a phone, select the image under AI images and tap Animate, then send.
- Not happy with the result? WhatsApp says tap refresh for a new set, or use Edit (Add, Remove or Change something), Restyle (a suggested style or your own) or Animate. Tap send to share it in the chat.
Edit your own photos with Meta AI
- WhatsApp says Meta AI can add a background, add or remove an object, animate a photo, or edit a photo of you. It won’t access your photos unless you upload them, and you can delete AI chats and photos sent to Meta AI at any time.
- In the chat with Meta AI: attach or take a photo, type what you want changed, and send.
- In any chat: attach or take a photo > Restyle with AI > Filters, Styles or Edit. Edit offers Describe (add or change something), Background, Animate and Expand (turns a landscape image into a full-screen portrait). Tap done, then send.
- “AI” label on a channel update? WhatsApp says channel admins in some countries must label updates that share AI content by law, and WhatsApp may detect and label it automatically there.
Edit your own photo with Meta AI
- WhatsApp says Meta AI can make a new AI image from a photo you upload: for example, add a background, add or remove an object, animate it, or edit a photo of yourself. It says Meta AI won’t access your photos unless you choose to upload them, and you can delete AI chats and photos sent to it at any time.
- In the chat with Meta AI (Android, iPhone and Mac): attach or take a photo, type what you want changed, and send.
- In any chat (Android and iPhone): attach or take a photo > Restyle with AI, then choose Filters, Styles or Edit. Edit offers Describe (add or change something), Background, Animate and Expand (turns a landscape photo into a full-screen portrait by filling in the background). Tap done, then send.
- Asking Meta AI about a photo or video: in the chat with Meta AI, attach or take a photo (on phones and Mac, also a video), add a question if you like, and send. On a phone you can also open a photo or video in any chat > the more button > Ask Meta AI, or forward it to Meta AI.
- Won’t send? WhatsApp says files can be up to 40 MB. WhatsApp Web and Windows take one image; phones and Mac take up to nine images, or one video plus eight images (multiple images are still being tested, so you may not have it). WhatsApp says videos currently work in English only, and its iPhone page says the same for sending multiple photos.
- Voice chat (phones): in a voice chat with Meta AI, tap more > Camera or Share image, then ask out loud. WhatsApp says ending the voice chat clears the photo, so it won’t be referenced later.
- Seeing an AI label on a channel update? WhatsApp says some countries’ laws require channel admins to label AI content, and WhatsApp may label it automatically there. See AI labels for channel admins.
Make an AI profile photo or group icon
- Profile photo (Android and iPhone): WhatsApp says go to Settings > tap your profile photo > Edit > Create an AI image.
- Group icon: open the group > tap the group name. On Android, tap the group icon > Edit > Create an AI image. On iPhone, tap Edit name & picture > the group icon > Create AI image.
- Then tap Create image and describe it, tap Edit photo to start from one of your photos, or pick a suggestion. Use Edit or Restyle to change it, refresh for new options, and tap the confirm button to set it.
Share an AI image to your status
- Android and iPhone: WhatsApp says go to Updates > Add status > AI images, pick a suggestion or describe one, select it (regenerate if you like), add text, stickers or music as usual, and send.
- “Add yours” sticker: WhatsApp says it lets others see and try your prompt. With your own prompt you can write a short description; with a suggested prompt, that prompt is shown. You can move, resize or remove the sticker before sharing.
- WhatsApp says your status stays end-to-end encrypted, so WhatsApp and Meta can’t see what you post.
AI stickers
- WhatsApp says you can create your own AI stickers; once you send one, it appears in your sticker tray automatically.
- Make one (Android and iPhone): in a chat, open the emoji panel > stickers > Create sticker > Use AI, then describe it. WhatsApp says up to four stickers are generated; edit your description to try again. Tap one to send, or tap and hold > Edit (Edit sticker on iPhone) to add text, emoji or drawing first.
- Keep one: tap the sticker in the chat (or tap and hold it in the tray) > Add to Favorites.
- Can’t make one? WhatsApp says AI stickers are only in limited countries, and sticker descriptions currently work only in English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish.
- WhatsApp says Meta processes your sticker prompt without seeing your account information. You can report a sticker that’s wrong or inappropriate (tap and hold it > Report; for one you received you can also block the sender), and WhatsApp may ban people who share inappropriate AI content.
AI video call backgrounds
- Create one (Android and iPhone): WhatsApp says join a video call or open the WhatsApp camera > tap the effects button > Backgrounds > swipe to Create with AI, describe it (or pick a suggestion), then apply it or refresh for new options.
- Languages: WhatsApp says call backgrounds currently support only English, Arabic, French, Hindi, Indonesian, Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai and Vietnamese (a shorter list than AI images).
- Remove it: pick “none” or another background, or use the remove-all-effects button in the effects menu.
Save, forward or report it
- Save on a phone: before sharing, tap and hold the image > Save photo; after sharing, tap and hold it in the chat > Save. On a computer: open the image’s menu (hover over it on WhatsApp Web; the button next to it on Windows) > Download; on Mac, choose Save to Downloads or Save as….
- Forward: in the chat with Meta AI, tap forward next to the image (or tap and hold it > Forward), choose a chat and send. WhatsApp says you can include or remove your prompt; if you include it, people can tap AI image next to it to make their own with your prompt.
- Report: WhatsApp says you can report an AI image before sharing it: tap and hold it > Report to Meta.
- WhatsApp says some AI images may not be accurate or appropriate, and you can send Meta feedback.
Hit the limit for AI images or videos? (Meta One)
WhatsApp says there are free limits on creating AI images and videos. If you reach the limit you can wait for the free limits to refresh, or, if eligible, you may be offered a paid Meta One Core or Premium subscription with higher limits.
- WhatsApp says Meta One is only in limited locations, only in English for now, and only on WhatsApp Messenger, not WhatsApp Business. You need a phone number from a country where Meta One and AI features are available, and benefits vary by location and may change.
- It only works on the official WhatsApp app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. WhatsApp warns that using or linking unofficial versions can get your account temporarily or permanently banned.
- Already subscribed? See your benefits in Settings > Subscriptions > Meta One. WhatsApp says it renews monthly on your original purchase date; cancel at least 24 hours before the next payment to stop future charges.
What Meta AI can see, and what happens to what you send
WhatsApp says Meta AI features are optional and provided by Meta, its parent company. They include chatting with Meta AI, creating and editing AI images, editing your photos, AI profile or group photos, AI stickers, and Meta AI in WhatsApp search.
- What can Meta read? WhatsApp says Meta can only read messages that mention @Meta AI or that people choose to share with Meta AI. It can’t read your other personal chats, and your personal messages and calls stay end-to-end encrypted.
- Does the search bar send my searches to Meta? WhatsApp says when you type in search you see results from your chats plus an option to ask Meta AI. Content from your personal chats stays on your device, and Meta doesn’t connect what you type to you unless you send a prompt to Meta AI. Searching chats for messages, photos, links, documents and so on works as before.
- What happens to what I send Meta AI? WhatsApp says Meta receives your prompts, AI messages and feedback to respond and to improve its AI, under Meta’s Privacy Policy and Meta AI’s Terms of Service.
- Can Meta AI start a chat with me? WhatsApp says no: only you or a group participant can start one, and WhatsApp says it makes AI chats visually distinct from personal chats.
- Does it link my account to Facebook or Instagram? WhatsApp says talking to Meta AI doesn’t link your personal WhatsApp account information on Facebook, Instagram or other Meta apps. But its About Meta AI page adds that in some countries, if you’ve added WhatsApp to your Meta Account (Accounts Center is being renamed Meta Account, so you may see either name; adding WhatsApp is optional), Meta AI may use information from your other added accounts, such as interests, age, location and profiles.
- WhatsApp advises not sending Meta AI information you don’t want Meta to know, says you can delete individual chats with Meta AI or request deletion of what you’ve shared, and warns its answers may not be accurate or appropriate.
- Third-party AI agents (including ones you build): WhatsApp says they only see what you share with them, but because a Meta service manages those chats for the agent, they aren’t considered end-to-end encrypted.
- Want to stop Meta AI being used in a particular chat? See Restricted chat.
Limit Meta AI for a teen
- Parents of teens: WhatsApp says Meta AI is designed for conversations generally in line with 13+ content ratings. If you’ve set up parental controls, its Android and iPhone pages say you can restrict it further: Settings > Parental controls > Meta AI > Limited.
- WhatsApp says parent-managed accounts can’t use Meta AI. See parent-managed accounts.
How to know it worked
- Our check: you can open a Meta AI chat, or you know it isn’t available in your country or language yet.
