Quick answer
On Android, WhatsApp says first clear the Google Play Store’s cache and storage (Settings > Apps > Google Play Store > Storage and cache), restart your phone and try again. On iPhone, it says to delete data and apps you no longer use and clear cached data. It recommends at least 1 GB of free space. For some Android error codes, it suggests removing and re-adding your Google account, or downloading WhatsApp from whatsapp.com/download/android.

How to update WhatsApp manually
WhatsApp says to always use the latest version, which has the newest features and bug fixes. You can turn on automatic updates in your phone or app store settings; if they’re off, update manually.
- Android: open the Google Play Store, find WhatsApp Messenger, then tap Update.
- iPhone: open the App Store, find WhatsApp Messenger, then tap Update.
- Mac: open the Mac App Store, find WhatsApp Messenger, then click Update.
- Windows: open the Microsoft Store, find WhatsApp Messenger, then click Update.
- Before you update: WhatsApp says make sure you have a strong internet connection and back up your chats. See WhatsApp backup.
- Registering your number? WhatsApp says you need the latest version, or registration might fail. See verification code not received.
- Can’t find the update? WhatsApp says updates may not be available in certain regions because of local regulations.
Install, reinstall or uninstall WhatsApp
Android
- Install: in the Google Play Store, find WhatsApp Messenger and tap Install. Open it, choose your language, tap Agree and continue, then register and verify your number.
- Restore: WhatsApp says that if it finds a backup, you can tap Continue to restore it, or Skip to restore it later. Then add your name and an optional profile photo and tap Next.
- Uninstall: phone Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Uninstall > Uninstall.
- No Play Store on your phone? WhatsApp says check your phone’s own app store, or go to whatsapp.com/download (external site, opens in a new tab).
iPhone
- Install: in the App Store, find WhatsApp Messenger and tap Get. Open it, tap Agree and continue, then register and verify your number. WhatsApp says that if a backup of your chats exists, you can restore it. Then add your name and an optional profile photo and tap Done.
- Uninstall: on your home screen, tap and hold the WhatsApp icon > Remove App > Delete App > Delete.
- App Store, Apple ID or download problems? WhatsApp says Apple controls downloading and installing iPhone apps, and WhatsApp can’t resolve App Store issues: contact Apple Support (external site, opens in a new tab).
Mac and Windows
- Mac install: open the App Store, search for WhatsApp Messenger, click Get, then open WhatsApp, click Continue and scan the QR code with your phone. See link a device.
- Mac uninstall: in Finder > Applications, right-click the WhatsApp app > Move to Trash, then use Touch ID or your password. WhatsApp says this removes WhatsApp and all of its data.
- Windows install: open the Microsoft Store, search for WhatsApp Messenger, click Get, then scan the QR code with your phone.
- Windows uninstall: Settings > Apps > Installed apps, click More options next to WhatsApp, then Uninstall > Uninstall.
“This app is incompatible with your device”
WhatsApp says it supports Android 6.0 and newer and iOS 15.1 and newer. From November 30, 2026, it says only iOS 15.5 and newer will be supported. Our note: if your phone’s software is older than that, the store may show WhatsApp as incompatible; update your phone’s software if you can, or you may need a newer phone.
- WhatsApp says that every year it looks at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These might not have the latest security updates or the features needed to run WhatsApp.
- Before support for your system ends, WhatsApp says you’ll be notified in WhatsApp and reminded a few times to upgrade.
- WhatsApp says your phone must be able to receive SMS or calls during verification, and it doesn’t support setting up new accounts on Wi-Fi-only devices.
- Rooted phone or custom ROM? WhatsApp says these aren’t supported, and they don’t let its security model work as intended. On a rooted phone or custom ROM, it says other apps might be able to read your messages despite end-to-end encryption. It recommends a stock ROM with root removed; ask your phone’s manufacturer how to unroot.
- KaiOS phone? WhatsApp says it’s no longer available on KaiOS and support has ended. It also says there’s no backup or restore from these phones, so copy any important information off the phone.
- Our note: downloading WhatsApp from its website doesn’t change which phones and systems WhatsApp supports. If your device isn’t supported, the fix is to update its software or use a supported phone.
“This app isn’t available in your country”
iPhone: WhatsApp says to check Apple Support for troubleshooting steps.
Android: WhatsApp says if Google Play Help’s troubleshooting tips don’t fix it, you can download WhatsApp from its official page, whatsapp.com/download/android (external site, opens in a new tab), and update the app from there (tap Settings > Allow from this source when you open the file).
Error codes
The table near the top of this page shows which fix WhatsApp gives for each Google Play error code. WhatsApp says if your issue isn’t listed, check Google Play Help (external site, opens in a new tab) for specific steps.
How to know it worked
- Our check: WhatsApp is on the latest version in Google Play.
