Quick answer
Active status: Messenger Menu > Settings > Active status > turn off Show when you’re active, and do the same in the Facebook app. App lock: Settings > Privacy & safety > App lock. Notification text: turn off previews under Notifications & sounds. To stop one person seeing when you’ve read their messages, Meta says restricting them does that.
What do you want to hide or protect?
Does this match what you see?
- People can see when you’re online.
- You turned off active status but still show as active.
- You want Messenger locked if someone picks up your phone.
- Message text shows on your lock screen.

Based on Messenger Help “Turn your active status on or off”, “Lock your Messenger app on your device”, “Turn Messenger notifications on or off” and “Restrict or unrestrict someone” (supplied by the site owner). App lock and restrict aren’t available on computers, Meta says.
Why this happens: the possible causes

| You want to | Use |
|---|---|
| Hide when you’re active | Active status off, in each app |
| Lock Messenger | App lock |
| Hide message text in alerts | Turn off previews |
| Hide read status from one person | Restrict them |

Meta says if active status is off in one app, you may still appear active in another app where it isn’t turned off.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Turn off active status in both Messenger and the Facebook app.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Turn off your active status
Meta says active status shows when you’re active or recently active.
iPhone & iPad
- Tap Menu, then Settings > Active status.
- Turn off Show when you’re active, then tap Turn off to confirm.
Android
- Tap Menu, then Settings > Active status.
- Turn off Show when you’re active, choose how long to turn it off for, then tap Pause.
Computer (browser)
- On messenger.com, click your profile picture (bottom left) > Preferences.
- Click Active status, turn the switch off, then click Save.
Meta says Messenger and Facebook are separate: turning it off in one doesn’t turn it off in the other. In Messenger, turning it off hides you everywhere you use Messenger, including messenger.com. In Facebook, it only hides you on the device you’re using, so turn it off on each device, and Meta says reinstalling the Facebook app turns it back on. While yours is off, you won’t see other people’s active status either. On Android, our note: because you choose how long, it may switch itself back on when that time ends.
Did it work? Our check: Active status shows as off in each app you use.

Fix 2: Lock Messenger with Face ID or a fingerprint
Meta says app lock makes Messenger ask for your face or fingerprint before it opens.
iPhone & iPad
- First set up Face ID or Touch ID and a passcode on your iPhone or iPad.
- In Messenger, tap Menu > Settings > Privacy & safety > App lock.
- Turn on Require Face ID (or Require Touch ID; some versions say Unlock with biometrics), then choose when to lock after you leave the app, such as after 1 minute.
Android
- In Messenger, tap Menu > Settings > Privacy & safety > App lock.
- Turn on the app lock switch (Meta’s page calls it Unlock with biometrics) and follow the steps on screen. You need a fingerprint or face unlock and a screen lock set up on the phone.
Meta says if your face or fingerprint doesn’t work, you’ll be asked for your passcode, and that Facebook doesn’t receive your face or fingerprint data. If you delete and reinstall Messenger, you need to turn app lock on again. It isn’t available on computers.
Did it work? Our check: Messenger asks for Face ID, a fingerprint or your passcode when you open it.

How active status works
- Meta says a green dot shows when you’re active; otherwise friends may see how long ago you were last active. It appears in places like the chat list and chats you share.
- Only friends and contacts who also have active status on see yours, and they can see if you’re in the same chat as them.
- Can’t see someone’s status? Meta says they may have turned theirs off, or blocked you. There can also be a delay before a status updates.
- Green dot on a business Page? Meta says that’s different: Pages that were online recently or reply quickly get one, so you may see it even when your own status is off.
Hard to see the green dot? Meta says you can change its colour in the app: Menu > Settings > Accessibility > Color filter, with options for common types of colour vision deficiency. It changes the active dot, recently active times and the circles around profile pictures. To stop sharing your status with one person, Meta says you can block them.
Hide message text in notifications
Meta says you still see Messenger notifications and calls when the app is locked. To stop message text showing in them, turn off previews: Menu > Settings > Notifications & sounds > Show previews (iPhone or iPad) or Notification previews (Android).
Meta says replying from a notification asks for your fingerprint or Face ID when app lock is on, unless (on Apple devices) you’ve allowed replies to locked notifications without an ID. More on notifications: see Messenger notifications.
Stop someone seeing when you’ve read their messages
Meta says that if you restrict someone, they can’t see when you’re online or whether you’ve read their messages, and they aren’t told. But there are trade-offs: you won’t get notifications or calls from them, their chat moves out of your Chats list, you won’t be able to message or call them, and you won’t see when they’re online. See how to restrict someone.
Our note: the Meta pages we used don’t describe a setting that turns off read receipts for everyone.

Frequently asked questions
Why do I still show as active on Messenger after turning it off?
Meta says if active status is off in one app, you may still appear active in another app, such as Facebook, where it’s still on. Turn it off in each app.
Why can’t I see when someone is active on Messenger?
Meta says they may have turned off their active status or blocked you. Also, if your own active status is off, you won’t see other people’s.
I turned off active status on Facebook. Why am I still showing?
Meta says on Facebook it only hides you on the device you’re using, and reinstalling the Facebook app turns it back on. Messenger is separate, so turn it off there too.
How do I lock Messenger with Face ID?
Meta says go to Menu > Settings > Privacy & safety > App lock and turn on Require Face ID (some versions say Unlock with biometrics). You need Face ID and a passcode set up on your iPhone or iPad first.
Does Facebook get my Face ID or fingerprint?
No. Meta says Facebook doesn’t receive information about your face or fingerprint.
Can I turn off read receipts on Messenger?
Our note: the Meta pages we used don’t describe a general setting. Meta says restricting someone stops them seeing whether you’ve read their messages.
