Based on eight Meta Help Center articles supplied by the site owner. Adding people to a group isn’t available on computers.
Why this happens: the possible causes
Why an option might be missing.
| Problem | Likely reason |
|---|---|
| No option to remove someone | Only admins can remove members |
| Can’t add people on a computer | Meta says adding people isn’t available on computers |
| Can’t leave a chat | You can only leave group chats, not one-on-one chats |
| Everyone in an old group is an admin | Groups created before March 20, 2018 give all members admin rights |
- You’re not an adminCheck this first
Meta says only group chat admins can remove someone, add admins or turn on join approval.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Check whether you’re an admin: you are if you created the group, or if an admin promoted you.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Start a group chat or community
Meta now lets you choose between a regular group and a Community when you start one.
iPhone & iPad
- From Chats, tap Compose.
- Tap Group chat and choose or type each person’s name.
- Choose Group (and add an optional name), or Community (and add a Community name).
- Type your message and tap Send.
Android
- From Chats, tap Compose.
- Tap Group chat, choose or type each person’s name, then tap Next.
- Choose Group (and add an optional name), or Community (and add a Community name).
- Type your message and tap Send.
Computer (browser)
- Go to messenger.com.
- Next to Chats, click New message.
- Type each person’s name, then your message, and click Send.
Meta says a Community starts with a Main chat, and you can create extra chats for different topics.
Did it work? The new group appears in your Chats.

Fix 2: Add someone to a group chat
Meta says adding people works in the apps but isn’t available on computers.
- Open the group chat.
- Tap the group’s name at the top.
- Tap Invite, choose or type names, then tap Add.
Meta says anyone you add will see all previous messages in the group, so check the history before adding someone. If the group has join approval on, an admin may need to approve them (below).
Did it work? They appear in the member list.
Did Fix 2 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 2. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 3: Remove someone from a group (admins only)
Meta says only group chat admins can remove people. If you don’t see the option, you’re not an admin.
iPhone & iPad
- Open the group and tap its name at the top.
- Scroll down and tap See chat members.
- Tap the person, then Remove from group chat.
Android
- Open the group and tap its name at the top.
- Scroll down and tap See chat members.
- Tap the person, then Remove from group chat.
Computer (browser)
- On messenger.com, open the group.
- Under Chat members on the right, click Options next to the person.
- Click Remove member, then Remove from chat to confirm.
Not an admin? Ask an admin to remove them, or to make you an admin. To stop someone contacting you altogether, see block on Messenger.
Did it work? They no longer appear in the member list.
Did Fix 3 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 3. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 4: Leave a group chat
Leaving stops messages from the group, but Meta says the other members are told.
iPhone & iPad
- Open the group and tap the names at the top.
- Scroll down and tap Leave chat, then Leave.
Android
- Open the group and tap the names at the top.
- Scroll down and tap Leave chat, then Leave.
Computer (browser)
- On messenger.com, hover over the group under Chats and click Options.
- Click Leave group, then Leave group again to confirm.
Meta says the other people are notified that you left, and you stop getting messages from the group. You can’t leave a one-on-one chat, only groups.
Did it work? The group stops sending you messages.
Did Fix 4 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 4. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Mute a group instead of leaving
Meta says muting a group stops notifications for its messages, reactions and mentions, and nobody is told.
- iPhone and iPad: open the group, tap its name, then Mute below the name and choose how long. Tap Unmute to turn it back on.
- Android: open the group, tap its name (or Information) > Notifications & sounds, then use the switches for Messages, Mentions, Reactions and Calls.
- messenger.com: open the group > Options > Mute, choose what to mute, then Next, choose how long, and Mute.
More notification fixes: Messenger notifications.
Admins: who they are, and making or removing one
Meta says whoever creates a group is its admin, and admins can promote others. Admins can approve who joins, add and remove admins, and remove members. In groups created before March 20, 2018, Meta says all members have admin rights.
Make someone an admin
- iPhone and iPad: group name > See chat members > the person > Make admin, then confirm.
- Android: group name > See members > the person > Invite as admin > ADD.
- Computer: on facebook.com/messages, open the group > Chat members > Options next to the person > Make admin, then confirm.
Remove an admin
- iPhone and iPad: group name > See chat members (then Admins on iPhone) > the person > Remove as admin.
- Android: group name > See members > Admins > the person > Remove as admin.
- Computer: Chat members > Options next to the person > Remove as Admin > Remove.
Make people ask to join (admin approval)
- iPhone and iPad: group name > Invites & requests > turn on Require approval to join.
- Android: group name > Invites & requests > turn on Admin approval.
- messenger.com: open the group > Options > expand Group options > Who can add people > Admin only (or Members).
Meta says pending requests appear in the same place for you to approve or decline.
Suspending someone in a group linked to a Facebook group
Meta says when admins or moderators suspend someone in a Messenger group chat linked to a Facebook group, they’re also suspended in the Facebook group. If the admin shares a reason, the person gets a notification showing how long they’re suspended, which rules they broke and the admin’s notes, without revealing which admin did it.
How to know it worked
- Your group members, admins and notifications are set the way you want.
Still not working? Your next steps
- Messages not sending in the group? See Messenger not sending messages. Group calls? See Messenger calls.
