How to Make Your Instagram Account Private, Hide Your Activity Status, and What People Can Still See

To make Instagram private, go to your profile > Menu > Account privacy and turn on Private account. Meta says on a private account only people you approve can follow you and see your posts, and your posts won’t show in search, Explore, hashtag pages or search engines. But your profile photo, name, username and bio stay visible to anyone, and people who already follow you keep seeing your posts unless you remove them. Business accounts can’t be private.

Quick answer

On iPhone or Android: Profile > Menu (top right) > Account privacy (below Who can see your content) > turn on Private account > Switch to private. On a computer: More > Settings > Account Privacy > Private account. In Instagram Lite: Profile > Menu (top right) > Settings > Privacy > Account Privacy. If the option is missing, you probably have a business account; switch back to personal first.

Does this match what you see?

  • Strangers can see or follow your account.
  • There’s no Private account switch in your settings.
  • Old followers can still see your posts after going private.

Based on Meta’s “Make your Instagram account private” (computer, Android, iPhone and Instagram Lite tabs) and “Differences between public and private accounts” pages, plus its pages on Activity Status, removing a follower, account suggestions, always-public profile info, profiles on the web, and comments and mentions from private profiles (supplied by the site owner).

No “Private account” option? Check for a business account

Meta says business profiles can’t be private. To go private, switch back to a personal account first. See Instagram professional accounts for the steps and what you lose by switching.

Public vs private: what changes

According to Meta:

  • Who can follow you: anyone (public) vs only people you approve (private). Follow requests appear in Activity, where you approve or ignore them.
  • Your posts on your profile and in feed: anyone vs only your followers.
  • Search results, Explore, hashtag and location pages: anyone vs no one.
  • Search engines (like Google): links to your posts can appear vs no one.
  • Downloading your reels and remixing your videos: anyone (unless you change settings) vs no one.
  • Embedding your posts off Instagram: anyone on or off Instagram vs no one.
  • Sharing your posts: anyone vs your followers, unless you change your settings. Only followers can see what’s shared in messages.
  • Your following and followers lists: public accounts on them are visible to anyone on Instagram and Threads either way; private accounts on them are visible only to your followers if you’re private.

What stays visible even when you’re private

  • Meta says these are always public, to anyone on or off Instagram (even people without an account), and can’t be hidden: your name, username, profile picture, bio, links, follower and following counts, avatar, Threads username and channels you create. If you don’t want people to see them, Meta suggests editing your profile.
  • Private posts you share to other networks (for example X) may be public there.
  • Your broadcast channel stays searchable and joinable by non-followers, but posts you share to it from a private profile are only visible to followers. See Instagram channels.

Your comments and mentions while private: Meta says if you comment on a public account’s post, your comment is visible and your username is clickable. If you mention someone who isn’t one of your approved followers, they won’t get a notification. For posts you send by Direct to a group, only your followers can see the comments or mentions on them.

On the web: Meta says a public account’s profile and posts can be seen by anyone at instagram.com/[your username]; a private account’s posts only by logged-in people you’ve approved. Meta says your privacy settings on the phone apply on the web too.

On a public account, Meta says your account may be recommended to others, appear in Instagram and search engine results, and its content may be accessible to third parties using research tools. Anyone can tag, mention, message-request or add you to groups unless you change those settings.

Hide when you’re online: Activity Status

Meta says when Activity Status is on, people you follow and anyone you message can see when you were last active or are currently active, shown as a dot or a timestamp next to your profile picture in messages.

  • iPhone or Android: Profile > Menu > below How others can interact with you, tap Messages and story replies > Show activity status, then turn it on or off.
  • Computer: More > Settings > Messages and story replies (below How others can interact with you) > Show Activity Status.
  • Instagram Lite: Profile > Menu (top right) > Settings > Privacy > Activity Status > turn Show Activity Status on or off.

Meta says if you turn it off, you also won’t see when others are active, including people who follow you or you chat with.

Stop your profile appearing in suggestions on other profiles

Meta says when someone taps Follow on your profile, they see suggestions of similar profiles, such as mutual friends. To turn this off (Meta says it’s only available on desktop and mobile browser):

  1. On instagram.com, click your profile picture (on a phone’s browser, tap it in the bottom right) to go to your profile.
  2. Click Edit profile.
  3. Turn off Show account suggestions on profiles, then click Submit.

Meta says that once it’s off, you won’t appear as a suggestion on someone else’s profile either. Our note: this doesn’t stop every kind of recommendation; Meta says public accounts may still be recommended elsewhere.

Remove a follower, or stop existing followers seeing your posts

Meta says if someone followed you before you went private and you don’t want them to see your posts, you can remove them from your followers or block them (how to block). Our note: going private doesn’t remove anyone automatically.

Remove a follower (Meta says you can do this when your account is private):

  • iPhone or Android: Profile > Followers (at the top) > tap X next to the person > Remove.
  • Instagram Lite: Profile > Followers > Remove next to the person > Remove.
  • Computer: click your profile picture > Followers > Remove next to the person > Remove.

Meta says people aren’t notified when you remove them or block them.

Teen accounts

Meta says accounts for people under 18 are private by default. Teens under 16 need a parent’s or guardian’s permission to switch to public, and teens 16 to 17 can switch unless they’ve set up supervision with a parent or guardian.

How to know it worked

  • Your account is private, and only approved followers can see your posts.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Being harassed? Block, restrict or limit interactions.
  2. Account taken over? See Instagram account hacked.
