Quick answer
Meta says channels can be started by a public account with more than 1,000 followers, and aren’t available to everyone yet. If you qualify: Messages > Compose > Create channel, set it up and tap Create. Find your channels under Messages > Channels. Members can react, reply and vote in polls, but can’t send messages.
Does this match what you see?
- There’s no Create channel option when you tap Compose.
- People in your channel can’t send messages.
- You can’t find a channel you created or joined.
iPhone & iPadAndroid
Meta says channel admin controls are available in the Instagram app for Android, iPhone and iPad.

How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: No “Create channel” option? Check the requirements
Meta says channels are slowly being released and aren’t available to everyone, and can be started by a public account with more than 1,000 followers. It says it’s working to make them available to more accounts.
- Check your account is public.
- Check you have more than 1,000 followers.
- Our tip: update Instagram to the latest version, then look again under Messages > Compose.
Our advice: if you meet both requirements and still don’t see it, the feature may not have reached your account yet. Don’t trust anyone offering to “unlock” channels for you.
Did it work? Create channel appears when you tap Compose.
Did Fix 1 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 1. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 2: Create a channel
Meta says you can use a channel to share announcements, behind-the-scenes content, event details or upcoming collaborations.
- Tap Messages at the bottom, then Compose in the top right.
- Tap Create channel.
- Enter a channel name, choose an audience, choose when the channel ends, and choose whether to show it on your profile.
- Tap Create in the top right.
On iPad, Meta says to tap Messages on the left, then Compose in the top left. The iPad setup options also include pinning the channel to your inbox and choosing whether members can reply to messages, and Meta doesn’t list the option to choose when the channel ends. Meta also says that if you share organic branded content in a channel, you must use the paid partnership tool to show any commercial relationship (branded content is only for professional accounts).
Did it work? Your channel appears under Messages > Channels.

Fix 3: Find your channels
Meta says channels have their own tab in Messages.
- Tap Messages at the bottom (on iPad, on the left), then Channels at the top.
Did it work? You can see your channels.
Did Fix 3 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 3. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
How channels work: why members can’t post
- Meta says anyone who joins can react and reply to messages and vote in polls, but can’t send messages. (On iPad, Meta lists a setup option for whether members can reply.)
- Our note: so if members can’t post, that’s expected, not a bug.
- Channels are public and discoverable by anyone on Instagram.
- Only the admin, up to 5 collaborators and up to 4 moderators can send messages. A removed collaborator stays a member but can’t send messages any more.
Invite people to your channel
- Meta says that when you send your first message, all your followers get a notification inviting them to join.
- Share the channel’s invite link. It can’t be turned off, but you can reset it to make a new link.
- Share the channel to your story (tap Share to story at the top of the channel), or tap and hold a message > Share to story. Meta says the story shows an image of the message, and people who can see your story can tap it to find and join the channel.
- Tap the channel name > QR code, and people can scan it with their phone camera.
Go live in your channel
Meta says channel admins can start a live video for channel members, and that only members of the channel can watch it. It says this isn’t available on computers, and only a public account with 1,000 followers or more can start one.
Start a live video (Android, iPhone and iPad)
- Open your channel, then tap Add in the bottom right.
- Tap Live. To add a title, tap Add a title… (on Android, tap Title on the right first).
- Tap Go live at the bottom.
- To end it, tap End video in the top right, then End now. You can then view its insights, discard the video or share it.
Before you go live, tap Settings in the top right > Live to use Hide Live From (hide your live videos from specific people) or turn automatic saving to your archive on or off. Meta says live videos are archived for 30 days.
Manage or delete your channel
- Rename or change the theme: tap the channel name > Change name (then Save, or Done on iPhone and iPad). Meta says you can also change the theme to a preset or a Custom image.
- Collaborators and moderators: Meta says the admin can invite or remove up to 5 collaborators and up to 4 moderators. Moderators must already be members, and can send and remove messages, manage collaborators and reset the invite link.
- Delete the channel: Messages > Channels > the channel > Options > Delete > Delete. Meta says it then disappears from everyone’s inbox.
How to know it worked
- Your channel is set up and people can join it.
