Can’t Find Someone on Facebook Search? People and Pages Not Showing

Meta gives different reasons depending on what you’re searching for. Can’t find a person? The search may be too general, or one of you has blocked the other, or they’ve limited their privacy settings. Can’t find your own Page? Meta lists nine checks, including age or country restrictions, an unpublished Page, missing profile details, and a new Page Facebook hasn’t indexed yet (typically 48 to 72 hours). Start with the section that fits.

Quick answer

Looking for a person: add their location to the search (Meta notes there could be hundreds of people with the same name). If you’ve blocked them, or they blocked you, or they’ve limited their privacy settings, Meta says they may not appear, so ask them to check their settings. If someone can’t find you, check whether you’ve blocked them. Looking for your Page: Meta says Facebook doesn’t show Pages with age or country restrictions to people outside them, or unpublished or deactivated Pages, and a new Page can take 48 to 72 hours to be indexed. Also add a profile picture, cover photo, action button and About info.

Does this match what you see?

  • You can’t find a friend or someone you know in Facebook search.
  • Someone says they can’t find you on Facebook.
  • Your Page doesn’t appear when you search its exact name on Facebook.
  • Some people can find your Page, but others can’t.
  • A new Page you just created isn’t in search yet.
  • A different Page with a similar name shows up instead.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Looking for a person? Add their city or location to the search.
  • Search for the Page from a different browser or device. Meta says browser issues can sometimes affect search results.
  • If you created the Page in the last few days, wait 48 to 72 hours before changing anything.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Can’t find a person: make the search specific, then check blocking

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says the search may not be specific enough, you may have blocked them, or they may have blocked you or limited their privacy settings.

  1. Search for their name and location. Meta’s example: there could be hundreds of people named “Jane Doe” on Facebook.
  2. Check your own blocked list (Settings & privacy > Settings > Blocking). If they’re on it, they won’t show up. See Block or unblock someone.
  3. If it’s a friend, ask them to look at their privacy settings. Meta says people sometimes forget they’ve limited them.

Meta says a person may also not appear because they’ve blocked you. If you still can’t find someone, Meta’s page offers a link to let Facebook know.

Did it work? The person appears in your search results.

Fix 2: Give a new Page time to be indexed

Safe & reversible2–3 daysiPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says Facebook may take up to several days, typically 48 to 72 hours, to index a new Page in search results after you create it.

  1. Note when you created the Page.
  2. If it’s been less than about three days, wait, then search for the Page name again.
  3. Use the time to complete the Page’s profile.

Did it work? The Page appears when you search its name.

Fix 3: Check for age or country restrictions

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says Facebook doesn’t show restricted Pages in search results to people who don’t meet the criteria, so the Page can be visible to you and hidden from others.

  1. Switch into your Page and open its settings.
  2. Look for any age or country restrictions on who can see the Page.
  3. If they’re set and you don’t need them, remove or loosen them.

Our note: Meta’s troubleshooting page doesn’t give the menu path for these restrictions, and setting names vary between versions.

Did it work? Someone outside the old age or country limits can find the Page in search.

Fix 4: Make sure the Page is published and active

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says the Page must be published and active. Facebook doesn’t show unpublished or deactivated Pages in search.

  1. Switch into your Page and check whether it’s unpublished or deactivated.
  2. If it is, publish or reactivate it.
  3. Wait a little, then search for it again.

Our note: Meta’s troubleshooting page doesn’t give the menu path for Page status.

Did it work? The Page shows as published and active, and appears in search.

Fix 5: Complete the Page’s profile

Safe & reversible10 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta’s checklist asks you to make sure the Page has a profile picture, cover photo and an action button, and basic information in the About section.

  1. Add a profile picture and a cover photo if either is missing.
  2. Add an action button to the Page.
  3. Fill in basic information in the Page’s About section.

Did it work? The Page shows a profile picture, cover photo, action button and About info.

Fix 6: Check the Page name and your access

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta lists a Page name that doesn’t follow its Page name guidelines, and not having access to manage the Page, as causes.

  1. Compare the Page name with Meta’s Page name guidelines. See Change your Facebook Page name for the rules and how to change it.
  2. Confirm you still have Page access to manage the Page. If someone removed you, or you think the Page was taken over, see Facebook Page hacked.

Did it work? The name follows the guidelines and you can manage the Page.

Someone can’t find you in search

Meta says if you’ve blocked someone, they won’t be able to find you in search. To let them find you again, unblock them.

Our note: your own profile settings can also limit what others see. See Control what’s on your profile.

Delete your Facebook search history

Meta says your activity log includes a list of the things you search for on Facebook, and no one else can see your activity log.

  • One search (computer): profile picture (top right) > Settings & privacy > Activity Log > Logged information in the left menu > Search > Your search history. Click Options next to the search > Delete, then Delete again to confirm.
  • All searches (computer): go to Your search history the same way, then click Clear Searches in the top right.
  • iPhone and Android: Menu (top left; on iPhone, then tap your name) > Options below your profile picture > Activity Log > scroll to Logged information > Search > Your search history. Tap Options next to a search > Delete > Delete, or tap Clear searches at the top to delete them all.

Account violations or restrictions

Meta says if your account has violated Facebook policies, you may be restricted from creating new Pages. Check your notifications for messages about account restrictions.

For what a restriction means and how to check it, see Facebook Page restricted or Facebook account restricted.

Pages with similar names

Meta says if there are multiple Pages with similar names, Facebook may show one over the other in search results.

Our tip: share a direct link to your Page instead of asking people to search for it, and make sure your Page name, profile picture and About info clearly identify you. Be wary of anyone who promises, for a fee, to make your Page rank higher in Facebook search.

How to know it worked

  • The person or Page appears in search, for example when a friend searches from their own account.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Want to rename the Page? See Change your Facebook Page name.
  2. Page has limits or warnings? See Facebook Page restricted.
  3. Lost access to the Page? See Facebook Page hacked.
