YouTube TV Not Working? Fix Buffering, Location Errors and Missing Local Channels

YouTube TV’s own troubleshooting starts with location, because what you can watch depends on your home area. Wrong local channels or location errors usually mean your home area or current playback area needs updating, location access is off, or a VPN or proxy is on, which YouTube TV says blocks streaming. For buffering, YouTube TV says you need at least 3 Mbps for standard definition and 13 Mbps to stream HD reliably.

Quick answer

First check Location in YouTube TV (profile photo > Location): your home area and current playback area must be right. If it can’t find you, go to tv.youtube.com/verify and allow location access. Turn off any VPN or proxy, which YouTube TV says blocks streaming. Then restart your device and router (wait 30 seconds each), update the system and app, or reinstall the app. YouTube TV recommends at least 3 Mbps for SD, 7 Mbps for one HD stream, 13 Mbps for reliable HD and 25 Mbps for 4K. You can change your home area twice in 12 months.

Does this match what you see?

  • YouTube TV says it can’t verify your location.
  • Your local channels are missing or from the wrong area.
  • Live TV keeps buffering.
  • Playback is choppy or shows an HDCP error on a Roku.

  • Location is wrong or can’t be verifiedCheck this first

YouTube TV says what you can watch and record is based on your home area, and it may need location access to verify where you are.

  • A VPN or proxyCheck this first

YouTube TV says a VPN or proxy blocks streaming, and to turn it off.

  • Slow internetCheck this first

YouTube TV says under 3 Mbps, loading may be slow or rebuffering may happen.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Turn off any VPN or proxy.
  • Open Location in YouTube TV and check both areas are right.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Fix your home area and current playback area

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

YouTube TV says to check your location settings first, because what you can watch is based on your home area.

  1. Check: select your profile photo > Location, and make sure your home area (your home ZIP code) and current playback area are correct.
  2. Update playback area on a TV: profile photo > Location > Current Playback Area, then follow the prompts. You may be sent to tv.youtube.com/verify on your phone or computer; allow location access.
  3. Update playback area in a browser: profile photo > Location > Update next to “Current playback area”.
  4. Change home area: at tv.youtube.com, profile photo > Location > Update next to “Home area” (or go to tv.youtube.com/settings/area).
  5. Turn off any VPN or proxy, and make sure the app or browser has location permission.

YouTube TV says you can’t change your home area if you’ve already changed it twice in the last 12 months, or if you aren’t currently in the new area. When travelling, you can watch local programming where you are, but not your home area’s local networks, and you can’t record them. Frequent travelers should use YouTube TV in their home area at least once every 3 months.

Did it work? The right local channels appear and live TV plays.

Fix 2: Check your internet speed

YouTube TV lists recommended download speeds for each quality.

  1. Run a speed test on the device you watch on.
  2. Compare with YouTube TV’s recommendations: 25 Mbps+ for 4K (with 4K Plus), 13 Mbps+ for reliable HD with other devices on the network, 7 Mbps+ for one HD stream, 3 Mbps+ for standard definition.
  3. If it’s lower, turn Wi-Fi or mobile data off and on, and lower the video quality in the player.

Did it work? Live TV plays without rebuffering.

On a smart TV, Roku or streaming device

  • Power cycle: turn off the device, wait 30 seconds, and restart it. Unplug your router, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.
  • Update: install the latest system update and YouTube TV app version, or uninstall and reinstall the app and sign in again.
  • Other apps: if other apps have the same problem, contact the device manufacturer.
  • Broadcast delay: in the three-dot menu, Broadcast Delay > Default (fewer interruptions) or Decrease (fewer live spoilers).
  • Roku HDCP errors: turn on HDMI Ultra HD Color on your TV. For choppy playback, turn off HDR in Roku’s Display type settings and choose 4K 30 Hz, 4K 60 Hz or 4K HDR 60 Hz.

On a phone or computer

  • Phone: restart the device, close and reopen the app, update or reinstall it, and make sure the app has location access.
  • Computer: close and reopen your browser, restart your router and computer, and update your browser. YouTube TV suggests Chrome. Make sure the browser has location access (in Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Location).
  • Clearing your cache and cookies may help with location problems. YouTube TV says managed work or school devices may block location changes.
  • If YouTube TV asks to verify your device’s identity with Google, select Allow, or playback quality may be lower.
  • On a Mac or Linux computer, YouTube TV says external monitors may show 480p because of copyright protections.

Sending details to YouTube TV support

YouTube TV says you can share debug details: on a computer, right-click the player and choose Stats for nerds or Copy debug info; on a phone, tap More and the stats icon; on a TV, open More in the player and select the bug icon. Send them to YouTube TV Support through the official help channels.

How to know it worked

  • Live and on-demand programs play, with the right local channels.
