Quick answer
To cancel, go to your profile picture > Paid memberships (or youtube.com/paid_memberships), choose the membership, tap Continue to cancel, pick a reason, and confirm with Yes, cancel. If it isn’t there, check who bills you: YouTube says if you joined from the iOS app, cancel in your Apple account; if it’s a Google Play subscription, cancel in Google Play. YouTube says your benefits continue until the end of the billing period, and there’s no refund for the time between cancelling and that date. For a declined payment, check your card details and billing ZIP code in Google Pay, or try another payment method.
Does this match what you see?
- There’s no cancel option in YouTube for your Premium membership.
- You’re still being charged after you thought you cancelled.
- YouTube says “Card Declined” or “Your payment was declined due to an issue with your account”.
- Premium benefits stopped working abroad.

YouTube says if you joined from the YouTube iOS app you cancel through your Apple account, and Google Play subscriptions are cancelled in Google Play. YouTube also says new Android sign-ups since 2022 are billed through Google Play.
- You already cancelledPossible
YouTube says to check the Status field on youtube.com/paid_memberships. Benefits continue until the end of the billing period.
- Card or bank problemCheck this first
YouTube lists expired cards, a billing address or ZIP code that doesn’t match, insufficient funds, and bank restrictions.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Open youtube.com/paid_memberships and look at the Status field.
- Signed up on an iPhone or iPad? Check your Apple subscriptions first.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Cancel YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium
YouTube says you can cancel a paid membership at any time.
iPhone & iPad
- If you joined from the YouTube app on iPhone or iPad, YouTube says to cancel from your Apple account.
- Otherwise, go to youtube.com/paid_memberships in a browser and follow the cancel steps there.
Android
- Tap your profile picture, then Paid memberships.
- Select the membership you want to cancel.
- Tap Continue to cancel.
- Choose a reason, then tap Next.
- Tap Yes, cancel.
Computer (browser)
- Go to youtube.com/paid_memberships and select your membership.
- Follow the cancel steps: choose Continue to cancel, pick a reason and confirm.
YouTube says until you cancel, you’re charged at the start of each billing cycle. After you cancel, you won’t be charged again unless you re-subscribe, and your benefits continue until the end of the current billing period. Our note: YouTube’s written steps are for Android; the computer wording may differ slightly.
Did it work? The Status field on youtube.com/paid_memberships shows the membership as cancelled.
Did Fix 1 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 1. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 2: Pause Premium instead of cancelling
YouTube says you can pause for 1 to 6 months, and you aren’t charged while paused.
- Go to youtube.com/paid_memberships and click Manage membership.
- Click Deactivate, then Pause instead.
- Use the slider to choose how many months, then click Pause membership.
- To resume early: Manage membership > Resume > Resume.
YouTube says annual plans can’t be paused, and pausing isn’t available if Apple or Google Play bills you. The pause starts after the current billing cycle. While paused, you and any family members lose Premium benefits, and downloads are kept but can’t be opened until you resume.
Did it work? Your membership shows the pause and the date it will resume.
Did Fix 2 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 2. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 3: Fix a declined payment
YouTube lists card problems, missing information, insufficient funds and bank restrictions as reasons a payment fails.
- In Google Pay, check your saved payment methods and their expiry dates. Use Edit to make sure the ZIP code matches your billing address.
- Remove an expired card and add a new one.
- Complete any request from Google, such as verifying your identity, and check Google Pay for alerts.
- Make sure you have enough funds, including any temporary authorization hold for a trial.
- Ask your bank why it declined. If you’re outside the US, YouTube says your card may need international or online transactions turned on.
- Try another payment method, or a Google Play balance where available, then retry.
YouTube says “Your payment was declined due to an issue with your account” can mean a suspicious transaction, that more information is needed to protect against fraud, or (for EU customers) that information is needed to comply with EU law. Check Google Pay for alerts; if there are none, update your name, address and payment details, then retry. YouTube won’t automatically charge you again.
Did it work? The payment goes through and your membership shows as active.
Did Fix 3 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 3. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Can’t find the cancel option? Check who bills you
- Apple: YouTube says if you joined from the YouTube iOS app, cancel your paid membership from your Apple account.
- Google Play: if your access comes from a Google Play subscription, cancel it in your Google Play account settings. YouTube says new Android sign-ups since 2022 are billed through Google Play.
- Already cancelled? Check the Status field on youtube.com/paid_memberships.
- You can check recent charges and your billing method at payments.google.com.
Refunds
- YouTube says active paid members can sign in and request a refund, and you may qualify if the videos or features you paid for don’t work. A refund ends your Premium access.
- Cancelling doesn’t refund the rest of the month: YouTube says there’s no refund for the time between cancelling and your membership’s end date.
- Google Play: contact YouTube support for an immediate cancellation with a refund, or use Google Play’s refund route.
- Apple: refunds need Apple’s authorization and follow Apple’s policies. Contact Apple support.
Our note: YouTube’s refund time limits are on a separate page that we haven’t checked, so we don’t quote them.
Premium downloads not working or disappearing
- YouTube says you must be signed in to your Premium account to download, and downloads play with that same account.
- Downloaded videos can play offline for up to 29 days; in some countries or regions, up to 48 hours. After that, reconnect so YouTube can check for changes.
- If a video is no longer available offline, YouTube says it’s removed from your device at the next sync.
- On a computer, YouTube says downloads work in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera: click Download below the video, then find it under Downloads in the left menu. An interrupted download resumes when you reconnect.
- To change quality: Settings > Downloads > Download quality. YouTube says higher quality uses more data and storage.
Premium not working abroad, and family plans
- YouTube says if Premium isn’t available where you are, you can’t use its benefits there, except for a limited time in the YouTube Music app. Videos downloaded before you travelled stay available offline for 30 days.
- If you travel for more than 30 days or move, YouTube may act on your subscription, for example by cancelling it, and will notify you.
- YouTube says misrepresenting your location, such as with a VPN, may lead to cancellation.
- Family plans: YouTube says family members must live at the plan manager’s address, confirmed with a check-in every 30 days.
How to know it worked
- youtube.com/paid_memberships shows the status you expect: cancelled, paused or active.
