YouTube Shorts Not Working? Not Showing as a Short, Blocked, or Views Look Wrong

Most Shorts problems come down to YouTube’s rules for what a Short is. YouTube says a Short is a square or vertical video up to three minutes long, and since October 15, 2024 videos like that are classified as Shorts. A Short longer than one minute with an active copyright claim is blocked worldwide. And since March 31, 2025, a Shorts “view” counts every time a Short starts or replays, while the older measure is now called engaged views.

Quick answer

Check the video is square or vertical and three minutes or shorter: YouTube says those are Shorts, while a wider video such as 16:9 is long-form. If a Short over one minute has an active copyright claim of any kind, YouTube says it’s blocked globally: it can’t be played, recommended or monetized. Remove the claimed content or dispute the claim. With Shorts Audio Library music, YouTube says most songs can be used for up to 90 seconds (some only 60 or 30). If views look different, YouTube says views now count each start or replay, and the older number is shown as engaged views in Analytics.

Does this match what you see?

  • A vertical video uploaded as a regular video instead of a Short.
  • A Short says it’s blocked, or won’t play for anyone.
  • Your Shorts view count doesn’t match engaged views in Analytics.
  • Shorts music can’t be used for the whole video.
  • New Shorts stay at 0–10 views for hours.

  • The video is too wide or too longCheck this first

YouTube says Shorts are square or vertical and up to three minutes. A wider aspect ratio such as 16:9 keeps a video long-form.

YouTube says these are blocked globally until the claim is resolved.

  • It was uploaded before October 15, 2024Possible

YouTube says videos between one and three minutes uploaded before that date stay long-form.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Make sure your video meets YouTube’s Shorts rules

YouTube says square or vertical videos up to three minutes, uploaded on or after October 15, 2024, are classified as Shorts.

  1. Check the shape: the video must be square or vertical. YouTube says a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9 is treated as long-form.
  2. Check the length: three minutes or less.
  3. Check the upload date: YouTube says videos uploaded before October 15, 2024 stay long-form.
  4. Upload from the YouTube app, or from a computer in YouTube Studio. YouTube says Shorts can be uploaded at up to 1080p.

YouTube says Official Artist Channels have a different date: December 8, 2025.

Did it work? The video appears in the Shorts section of your channel.

Music limits in longer Shorts

  • YouTube says most songs in the Shorts Audio Library can be used for up to 90 seconds of a three-minute Short, and some tracks are limited to 60 or 30 seconds.
  • Royalty-free music from the YouTube Audio Library doesn’t get a Content ID claim.
  • Uploading for a business or as branded content? See Shorts upload errors for business channels.

How Shorts views are counted

YouTube says that since March 31, 2025, views count the number of times a Short starts to play or replay, with no minimum watch time. The previous measure is now called engaged views in YouTube Analytics, and shows how many viewers chose to keep watching.

  • YouTube says this change doesn’t directly affect YouTube Partner Program eligibility or Shorts ad revenue, which are based on engaged Shorts views.
  • To join the Partner Program through Shorts, YouTube says you need 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.
  • Check your numbers: in the YouTube app, tap your profile picture > View channel > Analytics.

Our note: YouTube’s pages don’t promise a number of views for any Short, and a Short with few or no views isn’t by itself a sign of a problem with your channel. Be wary of services that sell views.

Shorts stuck at 0 or a handful of views

Creators often report new Shorts staying at 0 to 10 views for hours, even with strong retention. YouTube’s help pages don’t explain how Shorts are distributed in the feed, so there’s no official fix for low reach. What you can check from YouTube’s own rules:

  • Is it actually a Short? If it’s wider than square, longer than three minutes, or was uploaded before October 15, 2024, it’s treated as a long-form video. See what counts as a Short.
  • Is it blocked? YouTube says a Short over one minute with an active copyright claim can’t be played or recommended. Check for claims in YouTube Studio. See Short blocked.
  • Which number are you looking at? Views count every start or replay; engaged views count viewers who kept watching. See how Shorts views are counted.
  • Is it private? YouTube says Shorts are private by default for creators aged 13 to 17.

A reply in YouTube’s Help Community (from another user, not YouTube) also suggests checking:

  • Feature eligibility: in YouTube Studio, Settings > Channel > Feature eligibility, and verify your channel if features aren’t enabled.
  • Visibility: the Short is Public, not Unlisted or Private.
  • Audience: the Short isn’t marked Made for Kids unless it really is.
  • Original content: re-uploads from other platforms without significant changes may do poorly.
  • Clear titles and descriptions with keywords that describe the video.

Our note: if none of these apply, nothing may be wrong with your channel. YouTube doesn’t guarantee reach for any video. Avoid anyone who offers to “unlock” your Shorts or sells views, and use the Help Community if you want other creators’ input.

Make a Short in the YouTube app

  1. Open the YouTube app, tap Create, then Short.
  2. Tap or hold Capture to record, and tap again to stop. You can change the length in the top-right corner.
  3. Add music, filters or effects, then tap Done to preview.
  4. Tap Next, add a title (up to 100 characters) and choose settings such as privacy and whether it’s made for kids.
  5. Tap Upload Short, or Save draft to finish later.

YouTube says Shorts are private by default for creators aged 13 to 17, and public for creators 18 and over.

How to know it worked

  • Your video shows as a Short, plays for others, and its views appear in Analytics.
