YouTube Monetization Rejected, Paused or Disabled? Requirements, Appeals and Reapplying

YouTube monetization problems fall into three groups. Not eligible or rejected: you need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days, and reviewers must find your channel follows the monetization policies. Paused: YouTube says this happens when there’s no active, approved AdSense for YouTube account linked. Disabled or suspended: usually a policy or terms problem, which you can appeal within 21 days or reapply for after 90 days.

Quick answer

Open YouTube Studio > Earn to see your status. If you were rejected, YouTube says you can appeal within 21 days, or fix the policies named in your email and reapply after 30 days (90 days after a later rejection). If monetization is paused, link an active, approved AdSense for YouTube account and verify its address. If it’s disabled or suspended, appeal within 21 days or reapply 90 days after the suspension. YouTube says your channel is judged as it stands, so don’t delete videos before appealing. To apply at all, you need 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days, 2-Step Verification, and no active Community Guidelines strikes.

Does this match what you see?

  • Your Partner Program application was rejected.
  • YouTube Studio says monetization is paused.
  • Ads stopped running on your videos, or monetization was disabled.
  • You meet the subscriber count but can’t apply.

Why this happens: the possible causes

YouTube also requires 2-Step Verification, no active Community Guidelines strikes, access to advanced features, living where the program is available, and one linked AdSense for YouTube account.

  • Reviewers found policy problemsCheck this first

YouTube says a rejection means reviewers believe a significant portion of your channel doesn’t meet its policies. The email names which ones.

  • No active AdSense for YouTube accountPossible

YouTube says monetization is paused when there isn’t an active, approved AdSense for YouTube account linked.

  • Monetizing content you don’t own, or other violationsPossible

YouTube lists this, advertiser-friendly guideline problems, spam, AdSense or Terms of Service violations, and strikes as reasons monetization is disabled.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Check you meet the Partner Program requirements

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

YouTube lists two ways to qualify, plus requirements every channel must meet.

  1. Have 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months (Shorts feed watch hours don’t count) or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.
  2. Turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google Account.
  3. Have no active Community Guidelines strikes, and access to advanced features.
  4. Live in a country or region where the program is available, and follow the channel monetization policies.
  5. Apply in YouTube Studio > Earn > Apply Now, accept the Base terms, and set up or link an AdSense for YouTube account.

YouTube says a decision typically takes about 1 month, sometimes longer, and some channels go through more than one review.

Fix 2: Monetization paused? Link an approved AdSense account

Safe & reversible10 min (plus approval)Computer (browser)

YouTube says monetization is paused when there isn’t an active, approved AdSense for YouTube account linked to your channel.

  1. Link an active, approved AdSense for YouTube account to your channel.
  2. If you already have one, make sure its address is verified. YouTube says this is needed before payments are sent.
  3. If you run several partnered channels, link an AdSense account to each one.

YouTube says approval usually takes about a day, but can take several. Address PIN verification for a new account takes 2 to 4 weeks. You don’t earn for the paused period, but you stay in the Partner Program. Channel memberships are paused, and if monetization isn’t resumed within 120 days, you lose memberships and members are removed.

Did it work? YouTube Studio no longer shows monetization as paused.

Application rejected

YouTube says reviewers believe a significant portion of your channel doesn’t meet its policies; your rejection email names which ones.

  • Fix it: check your videos, titles, descriptions, thumbnails and tags against the channel monetization policies and Community Guidelines, then edit or delete videos that break them.
  • Reapply: 30 days after a first rejection. After a later rejection, or if you’ve reapplied before, wait 90 days.
  • Or appeal: within 21 days, if you think the decision was wrong (see below).
  • A new review takes about a month, and YouTube emails you the result. You can check the status in Earn.

Monetization disabled or suspended

YouTube lists these reasons:

  • Trying to monetize videos you don’t own.
  • Videos that don’t meet the advertiser-friendly content guidelines. Repeated or serious problems can disable ads on the whole channel.
  • Not accepting the updated Partner Program terms (from July 11, 2023), or a non-monetizing agreement with YouTube.
  • Breaking the channel monetization, spam, AdSense or Terms of Service policies. YouTube says severe violations can permanently disable monetization on any of your accounts.
  • Community Guidelines strikes, copyright strikes, or visuals matching third-party content.

YouTube says you can appeal within 21 days or reapply 90 days after suspension. Deleting a video doesn’t fix a strike; YouTube says monetization may be reinstated after 3 months with no new issues. Your AdSense account may also need address PIN or identity verification. See YouTube strikes.

How to appeal a rejection or suspension

YouTube says you can appeal with a video, or through Creator Support in YouTube Studio > Earn. Time limits:

  • Rejection or suspension: within 21 days.
  • Scheduled suspension: within 7 days of the notice. The suspension is paused while YouTube reviews. If that appeal is rejected, you can’t appeal again, but you can reapply 90 days after the suspension.
  • YouTube says it responds within 14 days. If the appeal succeeds, your channel is approved or re-approved within 30 days.
  • Don’t delete videos before appealing: YouTube reviews your channel as it is.

Video appeal rules: YouTube says the video must be under 5 minutes, uploaded as a new unlisted video to the channel you’re appealing for, narrated in a supported language or with English subtitles you added (not auto-generated), and show your channel URL in the first 30 seconds. Don’t put appeal details in the video description. Explain how your channel as a whole follows specific program policies, and show how you film or edit your content. Upload it, copy its URL, then go to Earn, start the appeal and submit the URL.

YouTube notes that channels in the European Union may have additional dispute resolution options.

How to know it worked

  • YouTube Studio > Earn shows your channel as approved, or your appeal as submitted.
